Annual Chamber Music Day

Open to DYO members and non-members alike, the Chamber Music Day is designed for all orchestral players (string, wind and brass) with some experience in chamber music, as well as those musicians who are completely new to ensemble playing. Each year DYO tutors are joined by professional musicians; in recent years we have been pleased to offer tuition from noted professionals Mia Cooper, John Lynch, Stephanie McCabe, Emma Montonen, Malachy Robinson, Arun Rao and Gillian Williams.

During the day, each chamber group takes part in three sessions with their own individual tutor, learning key techniques in playing as a chamber group. Groups are formed and music is chosen according to age and ability. We also welcome musicians who have already formed their own chamber group.

An informal concert for parents and friends is given at the end of the day, allowing each group to perform the music they have worked on with their tutors. The most outstanding groups are often invited to perform at a DYO concert later in the year.

As part of Chamber Day we also offer a percussion workshop, led by a professional percussionist. This special workshop gives non-orchestral musicians such as keyboard or guitar players the opportunity to experiment with percussion instruments.

The 2011 Chamber Music Day took place on Sunday, 13th February at Sancta Maria College, Ballyroan. Over sixty players took part in a most successful occasion and gave a very rewarding concert for parents and friends at the end of a very busy day.
