Joining DYO

Why join DYO

Dublin Youth Orchestras encourage children and young adults to play in a positive and friendly environment. We give an annual concert at the National Concert Hall in January and our tours have taken us to all corners of Ireland and to Northern Ireland, Scotland, England, Wales, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Belgium, Holland, USA and Canada.

How to join DYO

Every Player must audition successfully for a place in DYO at the annual audition. Supplemental auditions may be held only where the orchestra is short of certain minority instruments.
A player will be allocated to the orchestra suited to his/her age and musical ability entirely at DYO discretion.
A player will spend usually 2 years in each orchestra (Juniors, Inters, Concert, Symphony). If attendance is satisfactory, players retain their place and move up through Junior, Intermediate and Concert Orchestras without further audition. Players must audition for the Symphony Orchestra.

What does it entail

From the player the commitment to come to all rehearsals and concerts.
From the parent to help during a rehearsal or on tour at least once in the season.

When to join DYO

Most string players in DYO start in the Junior Strings, the youngest orchestra (minimum age 10), while the other orchestral members start in the Intermediate Orchestra, the first full orchestra (minimum age 12). However, every year some places become available in the Concert Orchestra (minimum age 14) and the Symphony Orchestra (minimum age 16).

How to prepare for audition

At the audition players will be required to play a short extract from one of their own pieces and some sight reading extract. They do not require an accompanist.
Players have to take lessons in their instrument from a qualified teacher.
